Show 115 to accomodate the gilsonite mining. " The Strip" becomes notorious, lawless collection of saloons, gambling and bawdy houses. Town of Moffat grows up west of the mine. Nearly abandoned in 1901, town is re- established and named Gusher in 1922 in anticipation of oil boom which fails to occur. The gilsonite mine is shut down in 1904. 1888 The Cowboy vein of gilsonite is discovered on the Uncompahgre Reservation. 1888 Post office is established at townsite renamed Jensen. Mormon settlers had come into the area in 1877 and laid out a town called Indian City. 1888 The Vernal Precinct is established. 1888 Mining town of Bonanza springs up on gilsonite vein located by Byron Colton. 1888 Mining town of Dragon is settled on " Black Dragon" gilsonite vein. 1889 C.
