Burns Bench Canal begins to convey waters from Broch Creek. Opens 1888. Bert Seabodlt files first recorded gilsonite ( a hydrocarbon named after its promoter Sam Gilson) claims-- all in the carbon vein located on the Uintah Reservation. Fort Duchesne established a U. S. Military post under direction of Major Benteen. Wagon road is built and improved by fort soldiers from Price through Nine Mile Canyon. First contract for mail from Price to Vernal is secured. Stations for horses and drivers are eventually established at Soldier's Canyon, Taylor's Ranch ( Nine Mile Canyon) Lee's Ranch ( Harper), Smith's Wells ( 1890), the Bridge ( Myton) and Ft. Duchesne. Uintah Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints is founded at Vernal, dividing the Wasatch Stake at Heber. A section of the Uintah Reservation along Deep Creek is leased to non- Indian homesteaders. Uintah and Uncompahgre Reservations are consolidated with headquarters at Uintah ( Whiterocks) Agency. A bridge is constructed across Duchesne river. Feed station, roadhouse, trading post are later established at the bridge, later called Myton. Post office established 1903. Cowboy L. D. Dyer discovers rich vein copper on Little Brush Creek. A smelter is built on Anderson Creek, but by 1901 the Dyer mine is played out, though not completely abandoned until 1920. Uintah Stake Tithing Office is built. Utah Midland Railway Co. is granted a right- of-way through the Uintah and Uncompahgre Reservations, but the line is never built. John Bennett, a follower of the Wild Bunch outlaws, builds a hideout near John Jarvie ranch. Congress removes a triangular " strip" of about 7,000 acres from the eastern end of the Uintah Reservation |
