Show 2 3\H/n THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN • DEPARTMENT OF FINE ARTS TAPPAN HALL • ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN January 11, 1960 Dr. Aziz S. Atiya Center for Intercultural Studies University of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah Dear Aziz: Your good letter of December 24 arrived after my departure for Cape Cod, where I spent the holidays with Hope and my three older children. We had a delightful time in our small cottage there, and I returned only a few days ago. 1 do appreciate immensely your kind offer to continue your good offices on behalf of the Mount Sinai Expedition. I accept gratefully your offer to write the Archbishop concerning our donation to the Monastery. This relieves me greatly because I did not know what would be a suitable amount and because I was not sure whether he would wish to have the matter discussed through the mails. You may recall that our donation in 1958 was $500. If you feel the amount should be increased this year, i believe we could find $750. However, I would defer entirely to your judgement. Thus far, I have not received from the Archbishop any reply to my letter of November 11, 1959, of which I sent you a copy. Meanwhile, I am following your advice that I send Mr. Hashem a letter concerning our hopes for another expedition. With it I am enclosing a copy of the letter of November 11, 1959, to the Archbishop. Mr. Hashem will then know exactly what we propose to do. As soon as I receive any replies, I shall immediately transmit copies to you. Thank you for the letter you wrote in reply to my postcard, sent while In transit through Salt Lake City. I was delighted to learn that you are all finding your new environment interesting and challenging. As the train carried me across the western plains and mountains, I sensed in them an epic quality which reminded me of Egypt. Perhaps you have felt this too. Please give my affectionate greetings to Lola, Nayra, and Rames. With all best wishes to yourself, I remain, Cordially yours, George H. Forsyth, Jr. Chairman GHF:SMP |
