Show 19 some nourishment. When it was time to go he found himself thinking it would not hurt to rest a while longer. He jumped up. He must not think like that. He must push on or he would never see his beloved Supi again. The rest of the day was torture for him. His tired, weak body rebelled against each step forward. Late in the day he found a clump of prickly pear cactus. One by one he cut the pears open and sucked the moisture from them. He chewed on the sweet meat until it was tasteless, then spit it out. It was refreshing. Sleep came quickly to his exhausted body. Toward morning he had a bad dream. He saw himself lying on the ground and Supi was standing over him crying. He struggled to speak, and woke himself up. For a moment he couldn't remember where he was. His thinking seemed all mixed up and his head hurt. He began to panic. He must get home! He was so close he could be there in just a short time. But which way should be go? He stood up and the ground seemed to move under him. "Oh, Great Spirit, help me!" he muttered. His knees crumpled and everything went black. |
