Show 14 sleep was fitfull and he dreamed he was walking in a dry, parched land. His mouth was swollen from lack of water. When he looked up, he saw Supi coming toward him, limping on her crippled leg and smiling. In her cupped hands she was bringing him water. Some of it was dripping through and Nuiji thought it would not last until she reached him. Then suddenly she was gone and his thirst was unbearable. The night was endless and with the dawn came a new fear. Would the braves give up hunting for him and leave? How much longer could he go without water? Already he could not eat. Hungry as he was, he could not swallow the dry food. His thoughts were interrupted by shouts from the hunters. Two of them seemed determined to leave the camp and the other three refused to go. Finally, the two left, and the remaining three sat around the fire and talked. In a short while the two returned and there was more loud arguing. Soon, the three who sat in camp picked up their belongings and left. Not long afterwards the other two followed. Nuiji could only guess, but he sensed they had given up the hunt. His hopes soared like an eagle. Coult it be true? Maybe it was a trick. He would wait it out. All day he stayed in the cave, tormented by his thirst. In the middle of the night he crawled to the stream for a drink. Never had water tasted so good. He was weak and it frightened him. He returned to the cave and slept soundly. |
