Show !^%/?9- M E M O R A N D UM MIDDLE EAST CENTER UNIVERSITY OF UTAH IO: Winnifred Margetts From: A. S. ATIYA May I thank you and Roger Hansen for the -.emorandum of April 17 regarding the evaluation of applications for the Middle East Library position! Since you have my written recooi lendations on behalf of Fawzi Tadros and Pai-Nan Wu, it will be unnecessary for rae to re-iterate the subject-matter of ray letters which are available for perusal in your files. In ay opinion, bofeh candidates are fit for filling the vacancy, and the only question is one of preference. In fact, I have pondered this problem very long and, taking into consideration the crucial subjects of the acquaintance with the special contents of our collection as well as the service to both student and staff, I feel that it may be wise to remain with those two candidates. Of course, Arabic being his aether tongue in addition to proficiency in Persian and a working knowledge of Turkish, Fawzi is a wide step ahead of 7u» Sdward Jajko may seem more impressive at first si^ht from his paper presentation of his case. But he is still a doctoral candidate which puts him behind Wu, '.ore-over, it is evident that in relation to the languages of our collection, he is behind Fawzi, Perhaps also his unfamiliarity with the different segments of our collection will be a hindrance for some time. Further, he imparts the impression that he is coming to function as an administrator and leave the day-to-day services to assistants. I doubt very much whether this is what we are looking for, Janice Ricciardi seams to be an agreeable parson, but her credentials fall short of the requirements which the other candidates have demonstrated in their ability to handle the varied sections of our Middle Bast holdings.
