Show Figure 3 Latest furnace design 3 . 3 The fuel and the burner a) The improvement of oil burner With the surface melt furnace, it is essential to burn fuel efficiently, and to transfer the combustion heat to the residue effectively. Therefore, duel-flow air mist burner with liquid- film atomizer has been used. This enables formation of wide-angle, short flame. While the conventional burner has good atomization near the flame center with an average mist size of 80 |im, it grows largertowards the exterior edge of the flame, and reaches as coarse as 220 Jim. In order to avid this, a new type of a burnerhas been developed that produces even mist diameter (75um) from the center to the peripherals of the flame. For the melting test, a swirler (a rotating blade) was added in order to accelerate the mixing of mist and combustion air. This enabled us to obtain a high load, short flame. Because of this improvement, and the modification of furnace shape, improvements in the melting fuel unit were attained.
