Show 2 work. Myj^plan would be to operate a very small project within the Monastery of St. Catherine's for approximately three to four months. I would place William Terry, my field executive, who has been directing the expedition's activities in my absence, in charge of this work. As Mr. Terry is one of the world's foremost photographers, he would be the ideal man to run this project. As you can see from the enclosed letter from Dr. Evans, we would supply you at Farouk University with copies of all of the manuscripts photographed at no cost to Farouk University, When we were at the Manastery of St. Catherine's a year ago, we discussed this project withathe authorities at the AL Monastery and with the Greek Orthodox ShurBh authorities in New York later on, and they seamed t»ry filling and pleased to have a project of this type conducted at the manastery, especially if the Library of Congress was associated with the project. As we would be operating strictly within the walls of the monastery, utilizing two motor vehicles to transport our equipment and personnel to the monastery from Abu Zeniah, I feel that it might be possible now to begin this operation, for example around the beginning of May. I must, however, secure permission immediately, in thatr.it will take a great deal of planning and final arrangements from this end, I welcome, as always, the closest possible association with you and Farouk University, and we would vaszae welcome any of your scientists or scholars as members of the project representing Farouk University. If this is impossible, I will ka in any case be pleased and proud to personally represent Farouk University to the extent of presentig Farouk University with copies of all the manuscripts. As this copy will cost us several thousand dollars to prepare, I am sure it will serve us as a concrete illustration of our continued desire to be associated with your distinguished university. Since the death of Nokrashi Pasha, I have made no further efforts in this regard as far as Egypt is concerned. I have written no one up to now, nor have I contacted anyone, with the exception of General Zaki Bey, the Governor of Sinai, who has been writing me quite often and has requested my assistance in entering his son as a student at the University of California, We are making all of the necessary arrangements at this end to facilitate the arrival of the Governor of Sinai's son, I am writing at this same time a brief report to the Grancf Chamberlain at for His Majesty, including copies of these two articles for His Majesty. I shall mention to the Grand Chamberlain that I have enjoyed the finest possible cooperation from your representing Farouk University and that I have requested your assistance for the future contemplated cooperative program for Sinai. / |
