Show 2 *fo The Tmes-lndepiendent Moab, Utah Thursday, April 16, 1964 Athena Tests Now Postponed Indefinitely The second test for the experimental Athena missile from the Green River Missile Base has been indefinitely .postponed, according to an announcement made this week by a spokesman for Norton Air Force Base of San Berdino, Calif. The first experimental shot of a 4-stage solid fuel research missile veered off course on Feb. 10, crashing near Duran-go, Colo. A second try scheduled for the middle of March was postponed until investigations of the mishap could be made. April was tentatively scheduled for a second try, but authorities reportedly stated this week the shot might possibly be postponed for another two weeks or month. Salt Lake Tribune 16 April 19614. Utah Firing Athena Shot Scheduled During May Tribune Washington Bureau WASHINGTON, April 15-The next firing of an Athena missile from Green River, Utah, to the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico is scheduled for the week of May 11, Sen. Wallace F. Bennett (R-Utah) reported Wednesday. THE LAST SHOT, on Feb. 10, went awry and the missile landed near Durango, Colo. "The Air Force and the missile experts have worked out their schedules and have determined the cause of the previous misfire sufficiently to go ahead wiiti'he next firing," Sen. Bennett'said. . THE ATHENA IS 55 feet long, weighs about 16,000 pounds and is a four-stage missile. Sen. Bennett .said the Air Force plans to test fire between 75 and 80 ^of these solid fuel | missiles. THIS WILL BE over a two-year period but the senator saic it was possible that other programs may be assigned to Green River after completion of the Athena, tests.
