Show OIL INDUSTRY BUSINESS NEWS Moab Times-Independent, Moab, Utah, 1 Oct 6k BY DON ROBINSON White Sands Proving Grounds confirmed Friday, the successful firing of an Air Force Athena rocket from the Green River Missile Complex, monitoring the missile impact in a predetermined range safety area. The Athena, fired at approximately 8:15 p.m. Friday, from Green River, and witnessed by many Moab residents as it passed southward, impacted near Dital, New Mexico, within the desired area. It was the second successful firing from the Green River complex. Major Richard Schmidt, officer in charge, confirmed the success in relating the official release to The Times-Independent, The next slated.liring, Major Schmidt said, would be Friday, October, 2. No time was announced. Schmidt has been appointed officer in charge of the Green River Complex of the White Sands Missile | Range where the Athena' mis-! sile program is in operation. MAJ. SCHMIDT has worked' with Corporal and Redstone missiles, and has had assignments in Germany and at White Sands, N.M. He replaces Maj. Vincent J. Culbert, who is in the hospital for a pre-retirement physical examination, as officer in charge of the missile site. MAJ. SCHMIDT is a graduate in Physics from The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and has been extensively trained in missiles by the Army. The Major's wife, Martha, and their five children will continue to live in White Sands foy the present. .
