Atiya Department of Languages University of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah Dear Aziz, I wish to thank you very much indeed for kindly sending me a copy of your book on the East Christian Churches. I am very happy that this book, which was so close to your heart, has finally made its appearance and I am sure that I will learn a great deal from it. Although, as you know, I am a Byzantinist, I cannot help getting involved in the problems of Coptic art. Last summer I attended y*e1symposium in Germany on the extensive Nubian excavations, and I took part in the discussion of the fresco paintings of the cathedral of Faras, one of the old bishop seats of Nubia where the Poles had made very important discoveries. So I am, at the moment, writing a short report on the art of Nubia in relation to Coptic art and other art provinces. For background reading, I immediately consulted your book, so you see it is of direct practical use to me. I hope you received in the meantime the book in which I had contributed a chapter on Sinai icons. It was sent off shortly after the new year. Is there no chance that you might come East and that I might see you? It would be such a pleasure to hear about you and your family, and about your trip to Egypt. During the first week in May there will be again a symposium in Dumbarton Oaks, and since you have*been able to come about this time to Washington, perhaps this will be a chance to see you. With my most cordial greetings and repeated thanks, I am, Yours as ever, Kurt Weitzmann KW:ir |
