Show 54 PENSYLVANIA. THE JERSEYS. I left Philadelphia the 6th of July, and travelled in the fiage as far as Sheminey-ferry, about feventeen miles; where I was overtaken by a gentleman and fome ladies of my acquaintance, who were o-o in rr a few miles farther upon a party of pleafure. b b • f h . They were fo obliging .as to make room for me m one o t etr chaifes, and we proceeded and dined together at Brifl:ol, a fmall town upon the Delaware, oppofite Burlington: in the afternoon we went ten miles higher up the river, and ferried over to Trenton, fituated in the Jerfeys. This is built on the eaft fide of the Delaware, and contains about a hundred houfes. It has nothing remarkable ; there is a church, a quakers and prefbyterian meeting-houfe, and barracks for three hundred men. From hence we went to Sir John Sinclair's, at the Falls of Delaware, about a mile above Trenton, a pleafant rural retire- . ment; where we fpent a moil: agreeable evening. In the morn .. fcCl:ly compofed, talked very rationally, and, having been well educated, afforded great entertainment to the dOClor and his friends, who converfed with him. One day as they were fitting together, he mentiond to the doCl:or, that it was very hard he ihould be deprived of his liberty, when he was perfeCl:ly well; and that it was only a fcheme of his relations to keep him in confinement, in order th<Jt they migRt enjoy his ellate. The doCl:or, who had perceived no marks of infanity, began to be llaggered ; and promifed, in cafe he fhould fee no reafon to alter his fentiments, to fign a certificate of his being well on fuch a day, in order to its being fent to England, that he might have his releafe. The day arrived, and the doCl:or was preparing to perform his promife ; but, whether by defign on perceiving fomething particular in the looks of his patient, or by accident, I could not learnt, he faid to the gentle. man ; "Now, Sir, I beg from this time that you will think no more of this " fooli!h affair of the mountain and diamond.'' " Not think of the diamond, faid the madman; " it is for this reafon that I want my liberty; I know ex" aCl:ly the fpot where it lies; and I will have it in my poJTeffion, before I am " a year older." This ftory was related to me in Tufcany, and I had no reafon to queftion the truth of it, . IDg, p R I N C E • T 0 W N. At t_his place, there is a handforne fchool and college for the edu cat ion of Difrenters; erected upon the plan of thole in Scotla nd . . There are about twenty boys in the grammar-fchool, and fi xt~ m th college:. at pre fen t there are only two profeffors , behdes the provofi:; but they intend, as their fund increafes, which is yet very fmalJ, and does not exceed zo:>o 1. curren~y, to ~dd to this number. The building is extremely convement, atry, and fpacious ; and has a chapel and other pro_per offices. Two fiudents are in each fet of apartments, wh,~h confifl:s of a large bed-room, with a fire-place, and two fiudtes. There is a fmall collection of books, a few infirumen ts, and fome natural curiofities. The expence to a fi:udent for room-rent, commons, and tutorage, amounts to about 2 5 J. currency per year. The provofl: has a falary of 200 1. currency, and the profelfors so I. each. The name of the coller:re is N alfau-Hall.-From hence, in the afternoon, I proceed:d to Brunfwick, eighteen miles farther, a fmall city of about a. hundred houfes, fituated upon Raritan river; where there are a~fo very ~eat barracks for 300 men, a church, and a preibytenan meetwg-houfe. It is celebrated for the number of its beau. ties; and, indeed,. at this place and Philadelphia, were the handfomefl women that I faw in A me rica. At a [mall diftance from the town is a copper-mine belonging to a Mr. French, (I was tol~) a pretty good one. The next day I rode up the river, about mne miles to the Raritan hills, to fee a [mall cafcade, which falls about fifteen or twenty feet, very rom ant icly, from between two rocks. The country I paifed through is exceed- ingly rich and beautiful;. and the banks of the river are covered with gentlemen:s houfes. A.t one of thefe I. had an opportu-- nity: 55 |
