The Utah-New Mexico Athena firings are expected to end Jyly 27 or Aug. 3 with a final filing. Hints Closing In a release last week, White Sands indicated that the Amrad radar would be closed. with about 35 jobs being eliminated at White Sands. That would-be in addition to about 53 other jobs on the base to be eliminated by the end of the Athena firings. However, in a corrected release issued Tuesday, the Army said Amrad has been used to obtain data from other missile systems as well as Athena. An Army spokesman was quoted as saying plans call for keeping the Amrad facility in operation for the time being and using it for certain data requirements, possibly includ-. ing the Pershing ballistic missile, among others. Post 8 Firings Eight Pershing firings from McGregor Range, south of White Sands, to White Sands are scheduled in June and July. Twelve other Pershings are to be fired from Green River to White Sands in October and November this year, spokesmen said. Asked if Amrad operations would continue after November, a spokesman said that had not been determined. |
