Show Denver Post WHITE SANDS MISSILE ;RANGE, N.M.-(AP)-A nine-year series of Athena missile launches from Utah to White --Sands Missile range in southern New Mexico ended early Friday •with the 141st firing, Army officials said. The launch of the final three-stage Athena-H missile originally had been scheduled Aug. 2, but was delayed twice by weather problems. The Athena launches, used to "simulate re-entry of space ve-' hides, now move to Wake Island in the Pacific Ocean, officials said. A White Sands spokesman "said the missile was launched early Friday from the range's launch complex at Green River, Utah. He said it impacted as scheduled at White Sands. " It was the final missile to be 'fired by White Sands as part ofj 7 the Air Force's Advanced Ballistic Re-entry System Program that began in early 1964. The spokesman said data obtained from the program has been used by the Army, Navy, Air Force and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to further the nation's "Jfofts in. space exploration. |
