UTAH (AP) - The fall series of Per-shing missile firings from Green River to White Sands, N.M., Missile Range begins Tuesday with- two shots scheduled in the early morning hours, .Array officials said Monday. Firings are scheduled at 3:15 a.m. and 3:45 a.m.' Batteries of the 3rd Battal-ioir 9th Field Artillery Missile Group from Fort Sill, Okla., will fire the first two Pershing 1A model artillery ordnance rounds. Twelve rounds are scheduled in the series which will ran through the first ' week of December, a spokesman said.' Units of the Federal Republic of Germany Air Force and the 7th U.S. Army based in Europe are to participate in later rounds. White Sands officials said the Pershing safety area between Green River and Dead Horse Point State Park in Utah will be evacuated starting at 11:50 p.m. Monday. The Pershing's first stage boosters impact in this area. ' White Sands Missile Ranger-28 Sep 73 Fall Pershing series begins with successes Two Pershing missiles were fired successfully from Green River, Utah, to White Sands Missile Range early Tuesday morning to open the fall series of off-range firings. The annual service practice rounds were launched at 3:30 and 4:05 a.m. by batteries of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Field Artillery Missile Group, the Pershing support unit from Ft, Sill, Okla. Both missiles impacted as programmed on ground targets on the range. The firings opened a 12-round series that is scheduled to run through the first week in December. Firing four rounds in October will be units of the Federal Republic of Germany Air Force. Firing six rounds in November and December will be units of the Europe-based Seventh U.S. Army. Support for the firing program is being provided by Army agencies from White Sands Missile Range, Ft. Sill and Redstone Arsenal, Ala. All of the Artillery-Ordnance rounds being fired are currently operational Model 1-A Pershings produced by the prime contractor, the Martin Marietta Aerospace Corp., Orlando, Fla. |
