Show Leigh B . Lint testified : 32 I was with the U . S . G . S . in 1921 . A boat was brought to us overland at North Wash and we used it as far as Bullfrog Creek . We then went out to Green River , Utah , where we obtained three boats of the Galloway type and used them down the Green River and through Cataract Canyon , continuing our work until we picked up our old lines at Bullfrog . ( R . 1467-8 , Vol . 8 . ) Progress on the lower Colorado River survey was very slow because we had to work on the side canyon up to a 3900 foot elevation . We had just one boat and encountered sand waves and shoals . It was necessary to go back and forth across the river in the boat and it took time to pick a channel . The main thing was that ( we -we we ) were compelled to keep a lookout for sand waves so as not to be caught in them with our load . ( R . 1470-2 , Vol . 8 . ) When we brought the boats down the Green and made our survey through Cataract Canyon we had an Evinrude motor in one boat . It was 16 feet long , ( 4-foot 4foot ) beam , and drew about 10 inches when loaded with about 1000 pounds . The other boats were ( 16-foot 16foot ) boats with rounded sides . We left Green River in September and encountered a lot of shoals and several times someone had to get overboard to push the boats along . ( R . 1479 , Vol . 8 . ) This situation continued the same through Stillwater and Labyrinth Canyons . ( R . 1480 , Vol . 8 . ) From Stillwater Canyon to the head of Cataract Canyon , we ( en- en ) countered no difficulty except that just above the confluence we hit a sand bar and broke the propeller shaft of our motor . From there on we ( didn't didnt ) use a motor . ( R . 1481 , Vol . 8 . ) ( I 1 ) ( don't dont ) think we could have brought the same boats with the load they had , up the river with that motor . ( R . 1484 , Vol . SO ( Ellsworth L . Kolb testified concerning this same trip , especially the journey through Cataract Canyon . ) The progress through Cataract Canyon was comparatively slow because we had to carry the line of traverse through at the same time we went through with the boats . ( R . 1484 , Vol . 8 . ) ( I 1 ) believe there are talus slopes on one side or the other all the way through Cataract Canyon . ( R . 1486 , Vol . 8 . ) As soon as we got through Cataract Canyon , the Kolbs took all of the boats except one . I was again on the Green River in 1922 , with the Trimble party but that expedition did not go below Green River , Utah . ( R . 1490 , Vol . 8 . ) Frederick S . ( Delleribuugh Dellenbaugh ) testified : I am 76 years old and am an artist and writer . In . 1871 ( I 1 ) joined the second |
