Show Section 5, Snow Surface Condition: Col. 2 and 3. Fill in the exposures outside the ski area which are most important from the standpoint of avalanche developments. Section 6, Avalanche Conditions: Col. 1. The observer's morning estimate of hazard. Col. 2. The actual hazard as it developed during the day. Note times when significant changes took place. Record avalanche hazard as 0, 1, 2 or 3 with a plus or minus sign if needed to indicate direction. Col. 3. If avalanche occurrence is not observed, estimate the time as closely as possible. Often the amount of new snow on top of a slide gives an excellent clue. Example: 2 inches of snow on top of slide; snowfall intensity was one inch per hour; storm ended at a certain hour; slide occurred approximately two hours before end of storm. Col. 4. Use the name of the slide or a designation that will pinpoint the location. Col. 5 » Record as slab, loose dry, combination loose damp and slab, etc. Col. 6. Record the size in terms of danger to life or property. The dimensions of important slides should be estimated: length of slidepath, depth and width of fracture penetration, location of terminus and tip. Col. 7 « Any avalanche occurrence of major size, which results in accident or damage or which has unusual characteristics should be covered by a Special Report describing the background and outcome in detail. The observer's personal impressions are important. Section 7. Closures: Record the time of closing or opening. This information becomes valuable when the usual complaints begin that the area was closed all winter. Col. 6. Time of touring restrictions need not be recorded. Touring is classified as open, not recommended or closed. Section 8. The three columns here are for the convenience of the observer and may be used to record data not classified elsewhere: use, power failures or any occurrence of interest, notes on experiments, etc. 1.
