Show direct action avalanche - an avalanche which occurs during or immediately after a storm and is the direct outcome of that storm. fracture plane the depth of penetration of an avalanche. fracture point- - the point or line at which an avalanche starts. hangfire avalanche-- an avalanche which hesitates a few seconds or even minutes after being released. This occurs only in slab, kegelsonde- -- a spring- driven penetrometer for measuring the horizontal resistance of snow to penetration, large avalanche -- an avalanche of any type with sufficient mass and momentum to be dangerous to life or property, lift- served ski area- that part which can be reached by skiers without climbing, major avalanche--- an avalanche big in every dimension, extremely dangerous to life or property, medium avalanche----- an avalanche of such mass and momentum that it would be unlikely to do more than injure a person and would not damage property, medium large avalanche- a classification of size between medium and large, dangerous to life, but only moderately dangerous to property, metamorphosis- - the natural changes in shape and form of sncw crystals within a snowpack. penetrometer- - a weight- driven rod or drill for measuring the vertical resistance of snow to penetration. precipitation intensity- the amount of water per hour being deposited in the fonti of snow. Expressed in hundredths of inches per hour. protective skiing- artificial release of avalanches in order to stabilize an area of public use. release point of an a v a l a n c h e - -- - usually coincides with the fracture point, but not always. May be at a point below the fracture, especially if release is caused by artificial means; a skier, explosives. settlement ratio--- a percentage obtained by dividing the amount of snowfall into the shrinkage, shear frame- a device for measuring the breaking strength of a snow section, snowfall intensity - the amount of snowfall in inches per hour. - 144- |
