Show 5- \ <=r I t 7~- PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRINCETON NEW JERSEY Department of Oriental Languages and Literatures Program in Near Eastern Studies April 5, 1957- Dear Dr. AtiyahJ It was encouraging last night to hear that you were at least disposed to consider an invitation to come to Princeton next year, I had understood from Professor Hurewitz that you planned to return to 3gypt this summer, but was not certain enough to deter me from suggesting the possibility of your coming to my colleagues who were unanimous in urging me to contact you immediately, I have not yet talked with the Dean of Faculty, and consequently this cannot be a formal offer from the university, but I would anticipate his agreement without any question upofr our recommendation. I do not elieve you would find the teaching duties burdensome, but rather of a nature that would leave you certiderable time for your own study and research. Subject to some adjustment in the light of conference with you, they would normally consist of four hours of reading classical Arabic texts with the advanced students and the conduct of a seminar on some aspects of medieval classical Muslirr civilization. Teaching would be limited to graduate students, except for an occasional lecture on a special topic in one or two of the undergraduate introductory courses. Several students will be writing dissertations and would wish to confer with you from time to time. Although not mandatory, we would be happy if you would care to join the staff conference research seminar, which meets for two and 8 half hours biOweekly (although this may be reduced some for next year), to study a topic which we will be determining within the next month} but this you could determine after sampling the experience once or twice. I am prepared to recommend the same salary which we have been giving Professor Buillaume and had offered Professor Arberry - $10,00.00, which would be paid in ten monthly installments beginning September ^0, Whatever you decide, let me assure you of our appreciation of your consideration of the invitation. I recognize that your new Coptic Institute is dear to your heart and you wish to get ahead with that. We would not press you to remain longer but only beg of you to consider this one year to help us out in this emergency in which we find ourselves. Ours is, I think, a rather pleasant and congenial academic community, especially our Department and Program, and I am sure you would have a happy and profitable year. With best wishes to you whatever your answer may be, |
