Show $: S" Firestone Library, Princeton University, irrinceton, New Jersey, April 28, 1957* Dear Professor Atiyah* I regret that a fortnight has elepsed since I last talked with you without further word about next year. The first week the Dean was out of town and I was involved in our annual Near East Conference. This week Ifve been absorbed with entertaining the American Oriental Society , at which I met the Jeffery's who said you were out of town, and tb.ous.ht you would not be returning until next week. Apparently the last was inaccusrarte. I hasten to put on paper the result of my conference with the Dean. The University is prepared to increase the offer another thousand dollars, to reduce the salary offered by at least a thousand, which would then make the non-taxable travel allowance two thousand dollars. In other words, a salary of $9,000.00 plus a travel allowance of $2,000^00. Although this is not fully what you suggested, I hope you will find it satisfactory, and this arrangement removing two thousand from the taxable column is worth substantially more than the extra thousand added to the original total. Half of the travel money would be available upon your arrival here in September, or payable to the transportation company before your departure from Egypt if that is necessary; although I should think you would probably wish to pay for the passage in Egyptian pounds and have the dollars available at this end. The second thousand would be available in the spring when you would wish to secure transportation back to Sgypt. Again, may I say how much we hope that you will find it possible to come to us next year. We all look forward to laving you a member of our community towhich you will all contribute so much* With fervent hopes of a favorable reply, Professor Aziz Atiyah, Princeton University. 99 Claremont Ave., New York 27, New York. |
