Show Souse notes for introduction to list of cataloged holdings in Arabic in the Middle East Library of the University of Utah Libraries Catalog is a photographic record of the shelflist of the Arabic books in the Middle East collection of the University of Utah Libraries, arranged alphabetically by author and transliterated title within the general categories of the Library of Congress classification . Some of the categories have been grouped together for easier handling. It will be noted that the strength of the collection lies mainly in the areas of history, Islamic religion, Islamic law,and language and literature. Except for older and emminent works, there has been little effort to collect in the fields of science and technology. Titles for works on civil law, received on the FL-480 Program, have been omitted. Soag^taax* At the beginning of the Program^cla^Ssified chronologically as they were received, but most have bees stored temporarily, awaiting completion of the Library of Congress K classification. Tell how the material was collected and about plans for further development of the collection. Mention especially the materials in the vault, not yet cataloged. Also the material in the Arabic workroom that awaits cataloging. Mention the Korans in the vault. Is it important to note that our collection is especially distinctive in Egyptian publications, but that we have a good representation of books published in Beirut in recent years and have lately received a collection of books, including manuscripts and lithographs from Tunisia? Do you wish to mention that the European language section of the library covering the Arab and Islamic worlds is quite limited - that we make no pretense of claiming distinction in this area? Or shall we confine ourselves in this instance to the Arabic books only? Our holdings in Arabic periodicals are not included in this list. The library keeps only selected titles received on the B&feiiKxkaifx PL 480 Program. In addition the library is fortunate in having many long, and in some cases complete, runs of older periodicals, such as al-Mariar. al-Muqtataf. al-Hjlal. al-Masfariq, etE. Dr. Atiya - These are only notes I have jotted down as something has occurred to me that might be helpful to you in writing your introduction. Your expression of anything I may have contributed here will be much better, of course - I hopeJ Would you like the list of our periodicals holdings? - £^^^--<*»_^^.&£^,,*sc5_ |
