Show 2 is the remarkable way in which it has been built up over a relatively short period of time and with, on the whole, modest funds. I am sure that any one who follows the course of its establishment and examines its contents will agree that it stands as a living monument to the dedicated efforts of its founder and builder, Prof. Aziz S. Atiya. No one other than Prof. Atiya could have accomplished this task so splendidly. For it is a rare person who combines his eminent qualities and distinctions: recognized contributions to scholarship, expertise in the fields of bibliography and documentation, wide connections with scholars and publishers in the Arab World and in the West, persistence in labor and devotion to learning, and the command of general confidence and respect. 3. In addition to the basic references, the general works and the specialized monographs which are needed for undergraduate instruction, the collection is well-equipped for postgraduate teaching and research in many aspects of Arabic studies. Its holdings comprise a worthy selection of published primary sources, of learned journals both in the Western languages and in Arabic, and of archival, manuscript and microfilm material. 4. In view of the importance of learned periodical literature to any serious research, one should commend highly the concern that has been directed to the gathering of sets of the major periodicals in the field (in the Western languages and in Arabic). These sets are in the majority of cases complete, and in some cases go back to more than a hundred years ago. As |
