Gross, Supt., Uintah and Ouray Agency. Dear Mr. Gross: Reference is mode to your letter of October 30, and accompanying news clipping concerning the death of Chipeta, the widow of Chief Ouray, and her burial in a canyon near where she lived. The principal matters of record in the Office relating to this woman are included in correspondence with Superintendent Kneale, beginning in Office letter of harch 21, 1916, and continued in his letters of April 24, May 31, September 19, and November 27, 1916, together with Office letters of May 5, June 16, October 2, and November 16, 1916, all of which are no doubt a part of your Agency records. In view of your suggestion that Chipeta1s burial piece is somewhat obscure and unsuitable for one of her well-known good deeds and generous nature, you are requested to give the subject further consideration with a view to some appropriate action that will accord with, end perhaps receive the cooporation of, public sentiment, and submit your recommendation which will be carefully considered. Sincerely yours, < r%. »}*. 'u '-*y y)> -/ l733y\ (Alt ,/• c Com danlonor. |
