C. 20009 RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN NEAR EASTERN CULTURE January 5, 1965 Dear Professor Atiya: My inquiry on the usefulness and availability of photographic documents for use in teaching Near/Middle Eastern languages, cultures and civilizations is drawing to a close. More than fifty scholars have given evidence and the cumulative weight of their statements is formidable. I am now putting the taped interviews into final form. I have gone over the typed transcript of your valuable oral testimony, editing here and there to consolidate and to eliminate the repetitions inevitable in informal conversation. I have excised my parts of our dialogue, which would, in any event, be out of place in a statement which represents your personal views. In order to preserve the vitality of speech and to maintain the personal flavor, your ideas stand as far as possible in your own words. The edited version of your testimony is submitted to you as the enclosed draft, which I shall be grateful if you will check over and correct as you see fit. Please give your most careful attention to any errors in the heading, and please supply any missing information, such as your present academic rank and degree, departmental or other affiliation, and specific courses which you presently offer. You are free to change or delete any part you wish and to add any further text that will bring your testimony closer to your present points of view. A spare copy is enclosed for your files. If I may have the corrected and initialed copy at your early convenience, I shall be doubly grateful. To expedite its return, I am enclosing an addressed and stamped envelope. In due time, you will receive your copy of the published report. If you have not seen it already, you may wish to read the enclosed offprint of a notice in the current issue of The Art Journal. As the title indicates, this article was aimed at architectural historians, but I believe the fundamental concept applies to every academic discipline concerned with the Near/Middle East. If you can use more copies, let me know. I often recall my pleasant visit on your campus. You and your colleagues did many things to make my stay pleasant as well as useful, and I am grateful. Have a fine New Year. Professor Aziz S.
