Show &o 366-THE BULL had killed somediing within himself. He looked fixed standing there widi one hand holding the useless gun, as if he would never stand erect again. Then die driver walked up and die diree of them stood silently and as if in a void looking into die corral. Behind them the truck-tractor sat as patiendy as a huge beast, hooked on the long trailer widi its small, insignificant load of one dead man. Beyond it the meadow stretched away, but the granite peak had disappeared in die lowering clouds. It was as dark as evening, as if a night were coming on, and widi the wind gone there was not a sound, not a motion. And as the three men stood there near the edge of the pine forest gazing upon the still and lifeless body of the old bull, it began silently to snow. |
