Show HI THE BULL-363 "In the truck?" "Yep. Just get in die back of die truck diere and when he comes up after you, just climb on out the front. We'll be ready to close die gate." The hired man tipped his hat back and scratched his head. "What do you think?" said the boss. The hired man was ninning his eyes up die chute and into the trailer. "Then how you gonna load more cows?" "Who cares!" The man controlled himself, shrugged. "Wait till he settles down. Go eat some dinner and wait; he'll settle down all right." The hired man's eyes were narrowed, gauging the possibilities. He was not frightened but he was not a fool either, and so he waited, judging. "Ahhh!" said the man, spitting out his disgust. "I'll do it. I wouldn't ask you to do it anyhow." He dropped to die ground and started to walk toward the trailer. "Dad!" The boy's face opened, shocked, his love risen to the surface, visible. He looked after his father with his love an open plea on his face. "Dad, don't!" The man turned back and looked up to his son's face. "Don't what?" he snarled. His son's love goaded him. "Don't what?" he insisted, a challenge to everything. The boy could only turn his eyes away, lips parted, slumping into his slavish posture, and the man went on. He climbed up the slat side of the trailer and called to the hired man to bring the bull up to the chute, so the younger man slid along the top of the corral and over to the loading chute, taunting die bull so that the angry beast followed him. Then he went up the outside of the chute close to the back of the trailer, calling to the bull, but the bull, standing at the bottom and looking up, was not going up without more reason. But now the hired man was in position to close the gate if the bull did go up, so the man dropped down inside the trailer and, edging forward, cautiously made himself visible to the bull. The bull grew alert, eyes on the man, not even looking at the hired man now, but he did not move. The man stamped his boot and the bull watched him. He stamped his boot and waved his arms but the bull remained immobile. Then he took off his hat to wave it and the bull charged. |
