Show B R O C K C H I S H O L M , M.D., comes to the University as a lecturer rich in experience and recognition in his field of mental hygiene. H e is an accomplished speaker, full of enthusiasm for the role of psychiatry in effecting lasting peace and social progress in the nations of the world. Dr. Chisholm, after nearly a quarter of a century of service to his native Canada and to England, participated on the technical preparatory committee which planned the establishment and drafted the constitution of the present World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. After serving as executive secretary of its Interim Commission, he was named the Organization's director-general in 1948 when it became a permanent international group. Dr. Chisholm is an ardent protagonist for the World Health Organization's principle that world peace may be reached only by the highest attainable standard of health, which is physical well-being-not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Many have been the honors and distinctions which have come to him: the Military Cross (1917); Commander of the Order of the British Empire (1943); William Alanson White Memorial Lecturer in Washington, D. C. (1945); Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation Awards (1945, 1952); first Kurt Lewin Memorial Award (1948); and the Order of Merit of Syria, Lebanon, and Cuba (1953). Dr. Chisholm is a noted psychiatrist, philosopher, author, and lecturer, and it will be a distinct pleasure to welcome him to Morningside. |
