Show THE BAMPTON LECTURES in America were established by a bequest of A d a Byron Bampton Tremaine and were suggested by the Bampton Lectures at Oxford University founded by the will of the Reverend John Bampton, sometime of Trinity College, and Canon of Salisbury Cathedral. The first Bampton Lecture in England was given in 1780. Mrs. Tremaine, a descendant of the Bampton family of England, provided in her will that the lectures be given annually and that the subject shall be of theologic, scientific, art, or hygienic nature, with the distinct stipulation that at least once in four years the subject of the course shall be theologic in nature. The current series is, of course, within the hygienic category. |
