When ·this paper when to press the exercises , as announced- were well under way, President Woodruff having offered the dedicatory prayer and the unveiling of the statue , Columb ia , having taken place . The speakers who followed Ma yor Baskin who delivered the opening · address were Ex- 1v1o yor Scot t , Judge Bla ir , Judge Colborn, Governor We st, Counci-lman LeGra iit'~ Young and Hon . George ~~ . cannon . All of ~hese gentlemen spoke in glowing terms of the beauty, solidity and prospective endurance of · the gr ea t edif ice and una n i mously agreed tha t it was a mo.o.1,1mmtto the f oresight , thrift and ability of the people of this ~ity and county . During the evening . the grounds were illumina ted as was also the building it s elf :c·rom the basement to the crown on Columb ia ' s head more than 200 feet above . It was a scene of enchanting beauty and hundreds of citizens t hronged the place until 11 o ' clock, when t he dance which had been in progress i n the bi'g a ssembly room set apart on the third floor for the Constitutional convention was brought to a close . ) . |
