Show Marcus,Howard second interview tpe 1 p.6 Played bridge. Just lots and lots of things and plenty of friends. And it was just a great experience. I think that san francisco had as much to do with it as Stanford. L WHat did you love most about S.F. HM I toldyou, the cultural life. And the beauty of the city. I think it's the most beauitful city inthe United S~tes. L what like then, what you saw then. HM I think it was more beautiful then than it is today. Atleast from what I unerstand, you didn't have the crime, the crime on the streets and tis sort of thing. I know there are a lot of new bldgs. there now. When I went to SaH~- Stanford, they were building theGolden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge, the Oakland Bay Bridge. And I saw them go ¢~ up and I fianllysaw them completed and what a thrill it was to drive across them. And what beauty they added to the natural beauty of san . fan. bay. I lovedthe cable cars. I loved everything about S.F. I loved the stores, I like to shop. L Didyou feel freer in S . F. than here .. HM Oh, yes. Oh, yes . Just a great city and after I graduated I went back there during the war, during WWII. I lived there for 2 years . Both in the city and then down inthe peninsula. And I thoroughly enjoyed it inspite of the war, it's still just a gorgeous beautiful city. And at that time, I thought I'~ like to spend the rest of my life there. But as things worked out, why, bsuiness interests and my mother lived here--all these things brought me back t==e= to Salt Lake. L What brought you back exactly. HM First of all my motehr because she was a widow and I was her only child. And secondly, business interests. LK Did you take over your father 's business .. HM No, not until aftermy mother died. And then I did. LK After war, when you came back, what business did you go into? HM Well, urn, advertising. I worked with an advertising agency for about 5 years. And then= I got into investments. LK What kind of adv. HM Oh, all kinds of advertising, general advertising. LK And then what didyou do after that HM I went into investing. LK What kind of ivestment. HM Oh, securities. Bankrupt railroads, public utility holding companies |
