Show Harold Marcus p.5 L: [Your father's interest in movies: did he want to act? or was it business?] HM When he was younger,before he ever came to Salt Lake. He and his--one of h'<"c>ti;c\.s" two deegl t~, I've forgotten which, used to act in minstrel shows in the east. But I think it was more for a hobby or avocation than for a living. L: did he ever talk about those times. HM Oh, yes, occasionally, occasionally, he'd mention them to me. L Did he ever recount a particular in-- HM Not that I can recall. LWas the minstrel show where you dress up in black face .. HM That's right. Yes. They were very popular around the turn of the century. L That was the Al Jolson, something like Al Jolson. HM Yes. L Was that happening in town here, do you kno~<J? HM No, no, I think that was back in Philadelphia. L So that was never brought into town here. HM Not to my knowledge. It may have been, but I don't remember ... and but my father's participation in that sort of thing was afore he came to Salt Lake. As I say, I think it was sort of an occasional thing more as a hobby. or a fun thing. Not a profession. L How didyour parents meet? Your father was working in town I suppose. HM Yes. My father was working here. And I think I mentioned that my mother who lived in Pueblo Colorado had a cousin, a first cousin, who lived here and she came over here to meet her. And then met my father. And they were married in 1912. L Do you know how they met? Were they introduced. HM Well, obviously they were were introduced. You know, in a small Jewish community and everybody, at that time, knew eveyrbody else, I imagine. |
