Show 32. GUITAR TABLATURE NINE POUND HAMMER In G or Capo by Adam Granger VAR.1 Good day (bueno tago) plectrists everywhere out there. This month, while I'm sorry to say that I still have not replaced the G-Team (you're probably glad to hear it), I have lots of music for you, so grab your guitars and let's get to work. I present this month four· ways to play the Nine Pound Hammer. The first variation is based on a banjo roll, but with more rests in it than a banjo would normally use. On the three note rolls, be sure to either alternatepick or employ a down-down-up crosspicking pattern. The important thing is to decide which you're going to do, and to be consistent. Even if you decide to crosspick, be sure to alternate-pick the rest of the break. At the end of the line, you can either repeat the whole shot, with the intro, or go on to another variation. (A quick glance will show you that I've got this instruction at the end of all the variations, which means, simply put, that once you start playing this tune, THERE IS NO STOPPING. EVER. So be sure to go to the bathroom, kiss the kids goodbye, and have a good strong cup of coffee or whatever before you start.) The next three variations get progressively trickier and jazzier. Smatterings of three-note-roll can be found in them, as well as jazzy pull-offs and seventh -oriented descending semiarpeggiated layered runs (in musician's lingo: 7th-O down semi-arp waffled riffs). Have fun with this if you can. If you can't, write me a nasty letter. If you can't write, kick me next time you see me. Other than that, it's been a quiet month, and I have nothing to report. Oh, I could talk • about the phone call from Ronald Reagan (I hung up on him), or about being invited to throw the first ball out at the All-Star Game (turns out Carl Pohlad is a big fan of mine), or about accidentally finding a cure for beriberi while tinkering about in my basement lab (I had actually been searching for a new improved flatpick substance when I inadvertantly swallowed a bit of the formula and subsequently cleared up a chronic case of that disease which I had carried about since my days as a South Seas gadabout), but you don't want to hear about all that stuff, and besides, you probably wouldn't even believe me, so instead I simply remain, Adam Granger |
