Show 24. RECORD REVIEW By: Ron Spears ~ PICll.RE AVAILPBLE THE BLUEGRASS ALBUM BAND VOL#IV. ROUNDER RECORDS #0210 PERSONNEL: J.D. CROWE-Banjo, TONY RICE-Guitar, DOYLE ~-Mandolin, BOBBY HICKS-Fiddle, TODD PHILLIPS-Bass, and JERRY DOUGLAS-Dobra. Here we go again; yet another album by the six 11 Bluegrass Super Pickers". Another album of standard Bluegrass Tunes, by the way of people like: Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, etc. 11 0.K., so how come I'm not jumping up-and-down?".Well; although the pickin' and singing is flawless, it just doesn't have the "Drive" that these fellows are capable of, and that I've come to expect from such as; Crowe, Lawson, Rice, etc. The tunes are well arranged and well executed; 11 But there ain't ,"No Fire''. Songs like;Cheyenne,Somehow Tonight, The Old Home Town, and When You are Lonely, just don't come up to the 110riginal Versions". Most re-recordings never do. If we want these songs, we go to the 11 0ld Masters ... These tunes sound great by other bands, at a "Festi val 11 , let's leave them off of albums, unless there • s 11 Some New Ground" turned-over. From a musicians view, there are no "HotLicks", just clean-straight pickin'. For the "Fan" who likes to listen to Bluegrass, this is good quality Bluegrass Music. I'm sure that your foot will "Tap" right along with this album. I just expected, 11 Better Things .. , from such "Super-Pickers". Well maybe "Next Time".
