Show Contradance missionaries proselytize in Moab A plague of musicians and callers from Salt Lake City descended upon the town of Moab, Utah in February, and promptly began converting local residents into contradance fanatics. A snowy Friday night potluck was our introduction to area dancers and musicians; Loose Shoes band members and callers provided a caller's workshop and dance band workshop during Saturday morning and afternoon. An evening contradance concluded the festivities at the local middle school. Moab dance and music stars Kevin Holladay and Martha Little were our contacts; they arranged for publicity, musicians, dancers, and the venue. Spring Equinox brings pottery sale, acoustic concert, potluck in Spring City Saddle up for Spring City's Spring Equinox pottery sale, concert and potluck dinner, March 19. The event features the beautiful, practical, art of Horseshoe Mountain Pottery Co. and the fine acoustic music ~ of Gael & Tom Shults. The Pottery sale runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Horseshoe Mountain Pottery Co. 250 S. Main in Spring City. The potluck dinner & concert is set for Spring City Hall (the Old School) 150 E. Center, 5:30p.m. to 6:30p.m., when the concert will begin. Potluck protocol is bring your own everything; cold dishes only. The concert is $5; $3 for students/seniors (and a bargain at that!). Spring City is just a 110-mile hop 'n a skip south of Salt Lake City, down the road a piece from Mt. Pleasant on U&-89. Saturday evening's dance was wellattended, with 40-50 participants on the dane€ floor and six Moab-area musicians joining the Loose Shoes Orchestra on stage. Everyone had so much fun that the Moab contradance musicians and dancers are making plans to hold monthly dances this spring. Dates for the Moab dances are yet to be confirmed, although there are persistent rumors of a dance on April16 (Moab denizens: listen to KZMU-89.7 announcements). Many thanks go to the Moab participants and to the Loose Shoes members, all of whom donate much time and effort to sharing contra-culture with other communities. -Rick Ebling Intermountain Acoustic Musician, March 1994 7 |
