Show Dear Editor, I am traveling across the U.S.A. to Washington from Mary land and I found your magazine on a Greyhound bus in South Dakota. I found it interesting, as I am a fan of Bluegrass music. I tore out the page with the application SQ that I may subscribe when I get to Washington. By the time you answer my questions (Carole) I will be receiving the magazine. My buddy took the magazine, but thank God I kept the page I tore out. I'll wait patiently for my first mag. and your answers [Questions for Carole]. Salt Lake City, Utah 84118 3 Ill @~@db§ Ill Dear Carole, How is it that the hammer dulcimer and the mountain dulcimer are both dulcimers yet they are such different instruments? Signed, /. M. Hammered in Salt Lake Dear Hammered, You are very perceptive to notice the difference. Both of the dulcimers originated from Europe, but the mountain dulcimer was misnamed. During the great potato famine in Ireland many of the Irish immigrated to America, and with them they brought an instrument that is a member of the zither family. Not knowing what to call it they just called it a dulcimer. Many of them settled in the Appalachian mountain region and therefore the name mountain dulcimer. The hammer dulcimer, which is an ancestor of the piano, is a true dulcimer. Dear Carole, What is the difference between the plectrum banjo and tenor banjo? Signed, C. Ifyano Dear Ifyano, The plectrum banjo is just a regular 5 string banjo in standard C tuning without the 5th string. It has a big long neck with 22 frets. It's tuned, from the bass string C G B D. The tenor banjo is a much shorter instrument. It has anywhere from 17 to 19 frets with 19 being standard. It is tuned C G D A. Boih are picked and can be played either in the chordal or melodic style. Harry Rezer is known for his tenor banjo playing and Eddie Peabody was a fine plectrum banjo player.
