Having enjoyed the hospitality of £gypt and the support of the Egyptian authorities, and haying been received most cordially by Monseigneur Porphyrios III, Archbishop of Mount Sinai, and by the monks in the monastery, they investigated the architecture and th* paintings in an exploratory manner, and a few sample photographs wera tsksn by Mr. Fred Andersgg, Supsrvisor of Photographic Ssrvioss Of the University of Michigan. m results of this exploratory trip wars vary gratifying and immediately thsreafter plans were aada for a sore systematic and mora comprehensive study of the artistic monumentsJA An opportunity offers it- • self to all three scholars asntlonad above to return to the monastery in the spring of 1958 and to spend the three Months, from April through June, in the Monastery In order to obtain a acre complete photographic raoord of the monuasnts and to study the objects sore thoroughly. This plan is wholeheartedly endorsed by the two universities, and a committee has been formed which, in addition to the three scholars taking part in the planned expedition, includes Dean Charles E. Odegaard, College of Literature, Science and the Arts of the University of Michigan, and Professor Rensselaer Lee, Chairman of the Department of .trt and Archaeology of Princeton University. It is hoped that this expedition will result In a comprehensive publication, to be brought out under the auapioaa of the Dspartment of Art and Archaeology of Princeton University.
