Atiya University of Utah Center for Language & Intercultural Studies Salt Lake City, Utah. Dear Dr. Atiya: Professor Weitzmann has just told me of your most generous gesture in consenting to lend to us for our Mt. Sinai exhibition the precious St. Catherine icon which was presented to you by the Archbishop. We appreciate this more than I can say, and feel as you do that the benefits accruing from its display here will indeed be great. As Professor Weitzmann has explained to you, we are trying to arrange an exhibition which will provide an historical setting for the splendid photographs obtained by the Princeton-Michigan Expedition. It has seemed to us that a few authentic art objects,as distinguished from photographic reproductions, will greatly enhance the interest of the display and give it an impact which it could not otherwise have. Thus, your generosity contributes immeasurably to a realization of this aim. Concerning the practical problem of safe shipment, I suggest the following: I assume that you can find in Salt Lake City someone who can pack the icon properly for you in a wooden crate of some kind. I would be very glad to bear any expenses connected with the packing. You can either ask the packer to send the bill directly to me, or, if you prefer I can reimburse you for any payments that you may make. Send the package by railway express, collect, by "Protective Signature Service." I suggest that you indicate the value as $500.00 for the purpose of the express company declaration. Address the package to: Mr. Howard C. Rice, Jr. Princeton University Library Princeton, New Jersey We would like, if possible, to have it in hand by the first of February, since we must have our exhibition ready for the 12th, and it always takes time to arrange things properly. If you could have it shipped about the middle of January, I should think that it would reach us in ample time. / « • . |
