Show PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRINCETON, NEW JERSEY Defartment of Art and Archaeology Apr 1 1 9 , 19 6 0 Professor Aziz S. Atiya Department of Languages University of Utah Salt Lake City, Utah Dear Aziz: It gives me great satisfaction and pleasure to send to you a copy of Archbishop Porphyrios* letter to me which arrived the day before yesterday. As you can see, the door to Sinai Monastery, which you helped to open, is and will remain open to us, and it remains only to be hoped that in the not too distant future, if not this year maybe next time, we will march through the open gate together. As you can see, the letter is a point by point answer to the one I had written previously and of which you have a copy. Not only has everything we asked for been granted, but it was particularly gratifying to me to know that there is a new librarian, who will be available for our studies in the library. Do you know, by any chance, the Archimandrite Germanos mentioned in Porphyrios' letter? I also want to let you know that Princeton's efforts have been successful in raising some means and that we actually are able to match Ann Arbor's sum, so the financial burden will no longer be primarily on their shoulders. Of course, the time is now running out. Fortunately, George, who was here the last two days, is going to be Washington next week and spending some time there; this will enable him to contact the Egyptian Embassy and take control of the technicalities. He is not teaching this term and at the moment has more time than I have. Our exhibition has really been a success and crowds are still dropping in, but it will be coming to a close a week from Sunday, and I am sure that Mr. Rice will take care that your icon returns to the quiet wall in your house. I take this occasion to thank you once more wholeheartedly for your gracious cooperation and for letting us have the icon for so long. I hope that you and your family are in good health, and I only regret that Utah is so far away and that I might not have any chance to see you before I leave for Europe, which will be on June 14, since I intend to stay a short while in Germany before I go south. With my kindest regards to you and your family, Yours as ever, KW:mb 1%\%\ 2J lu^___ |
