Wendell would like to present it to you personally but, unfortunately, he is in the hospital again. Anyway, it comes to you wrapped in his very best wishes and special affection. Wendell suffered another serious heart attack about a month ago. This was followed by internal bleeding and a large blood clot which formed in his lungs. Last week, the doctor gave us the following report: "Wendell is a miracle man...With his multiple problems, his chances for survival were close to zero...The other day, at the worst stage, his heart stopped completely for a short period...But then, after seventy-two more hours in critical condition, Wendell started another of his literal 'never-say-die' comebacks...Today, his vital signs are approaching normal." Since Wendell's heart attack and stroke which first occurred Christmas day of 1973, Wendell has spent most of his time in hospital beds. From the beginning and several times up to and including last week, the doctors did not expect him to pull through. But each time, when he was often in a coma in the intensive care unit, he called upon his deep faith and inner strength and overcame the odds based on medical prognosis. A major factor in Wendell's comeback against the odds is this book on the Life of Jesus. It has been uppermost in his thoughts and conversation. He started on this project about fifteen years ago and the manuscript was always close at hand in his office, home, extensive travels, and hospital room. We remain convinced that if Wendell was indeed close to death last week, then he negotiated a concession with his maker for an indefinite postponement based on publication of this scholarly volume plus a shorter popular edition he has been working on and plans to publish next year.
