Show 23 ? 6 I/o ameRican foundation foa the stu£>y of man, inc. 142 WEST 49th STREET, NEW YORK CITY OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT CIRCLE 5-5686 June 14 1954 Professor Aziz S. Atiya 14 Sharia Wadi el Nil Maadi, Cairo, Egypt. Dear Aziz: I was so very happy to receive your fine letter of June the 3rd and forgive me for not having kept in better touch with you lately. It was a shame that during both my somewhat prolonged visits in Egypt this year you were away. However I hope during my next visit to Egypt we will have a chance to have many long visits. I have been out in California for the past two weeks and have just now returned to my New York office. Thus the delay in replying to your letter. I am of course very sorry for all of the delay with regard to your Sflt. Sinai volume. However for the last few days I have devoted almost my full time to getting your volume under way and it will now appear as Volume I of our American Foundation series of volumes to appear through the Johns Hopkins University Press. The reason for the delay was not just about your volume but that we were publishing your volume along with five or six other volumes on Arabia which means that your volume will have the advantage of the beautiful layout, binding, printing, etc, that we are utilizing for the Arabian series. I know you will be pleased with the volume and that it will reflect a great deal of credit on you which you so richly deserve. I was just talking to Verner Clapp two days ago and the Library of Congress is ordering 500 dollars worth of your volume which will help me with my publication costs, which is as you can well imagine, many times greater than if we had just published a paper bound booklet as was originally planned through the Library of Congress. I note with interest what you say relative to your Higher Institute of Coptic Studies and look forward to going over the details with you during my next visit to Cairo. I may be in Cairo within the / next four to six weeks in that I have a new oil project taking form in* the Persian Gulf area and will stop off in Cairo. { As far as the oil project in Egypt, I am afraid that thingS|did not work out too well. Certainly not through any fault of yours. Wfflle |
