Sharia Wad I el-Nil Maadi (Near Cairo) Egypt. Dear Professor Atiya: Your very fine letter of July the 15th reached me this morning. I wish to thank you for all the nice things you said about my receiving the Doctorate of Science degree from Marietta College. In the meantime I had a very nice visit with Dr. Luther Evans and Verner Clapp in the Library of Congress last week. They showed me your manuscript and I have since showed it to Professor W.F. Albright at Johns Hopkins University. I think that this manuscript would be one which the Directors of the American Foundation would give serious thought to publishing in our extensive new series through the Princeton University Press. I will notify you further in this regard in the near future. I would now like to ask a personal favor from yourself. As the story is, in this manuscript, centered around the Arabic manuscripts which is your special field end as you are the author of the book, I feel that there are various things which should be said about your work and about your participation which it is impossible for you to say yourself. Therefore, with your permission I would like to write under my name, a brief introduction to this volume of yours, telling of your work and of your contribution to the expeditions success as well as outlining a little about the expedition as such. In other words the only part of your manuscript which I would like to write myself is the very small section devoted to the actual operation of the expedition itself. This of course has nothing to do with the history of the Monastery, or of_your major accomplishments s.t the Monastery. I have just completed a very special leather-bound volume printed in part in gold, which I am presenting to the Egyptian Ambassador here in Washington in the next few days to be sent personally to His Majesty with my best wishes. I am also planning to be in Egypt in the near future and will of course let you know^of my arrival so that we can have a little visit and discuss many things including possible future projects. |
