Show July 25, 1 Or. M. A. A. Hafez, Director United Arab Republic Ministry of Education U, A. |, Education Bureau 2215 Wyoming Avenue, N. W. Washington 8, 0. C. Dear Dr. Hafez: Please forgive my not answering sooner your kind letter of June 21, 1960, concerning the proposed archaeological expedition of the University of Alexandria, Michigan, and Princeton. As a matter of fact I was away on my wedding trip. After reading carefully the four stipulations In your letter srnd after discussing them with Professor Kurt Weltzmann, the Princeton representative in our collaboration, and with Mr, Fred Anderegg of The University of Michigan, who Is In charge of all photographic operations of the Expedition, S can say that the four stipulations are perfectly acceptable to all of us. From our standpoint, It is highly desirable that the University of Alexandria be a full participant In the collaboration between our three universities. The four points mentioned in your letter appear to guarantee such a full participation and are therefore very welcome to us. With regard to your request for a complete collection of publications of our two expeditions to the Monastery of St. Catherine, I am happy to comply. Thus far, neither Dr. Wettzmann nor I have really ventured into the scholarly publication of our findings at the Monastery because the amount of material collected there is so vast that we feel we should make further progress with the field work. On the other hand, both of us have lectured widely on the subject since 1958, and you may be sure we have stressed In these lectures the courtesies shown to us by the Egyptian Government and the University of Alexandria, There had been nupTerous press releases from both Princeton an4 Michigan, of which I enclose samples. In the future, when we come to the publication of scholarly results, we shall of course keep in close touch with our colleagues at the University of Alexandria, i regain, Very sincerely yours, George H. Forsyth, Jr., Chairman and Field director, Mt. Sinai Expeditions GHF:UCF Encs. Via Air Hail |
