Show August 2, 1960 Dr. George H. Forsyth Jr. c/o Department of Art and Archaeology Princeton University Princeton, N« J. Dear George It was a pleasant surprise to have your letter of July 28 at a time when I thought you were already in Europe. But apparently Ilene1s very kind message from Germany did not mean that you were there for the summer. It was a great pleasure to hear from her and we must commission you to tender our thanks to her* We have just written a note to her and I am wondering whether it will reach her* We have been away for a little time and it was not possible to write her earlier* I am sure that she will enjoy Sinai immensely and that ail of you will carry with you our affectionate greetings to Lily, Fuad and their two sons* Have a good journey, a pleasant sojourn in Cairo, a successful expedition to Sinai and a safe return* We shall look forward to seeing you then. I am sorry for Carl Kraeiing and the curtailment of St* Saba's. I hope he is not in a serious condition* It is rather sad. I don!jj£ think he is too old. Thanks for including Abdellah Raaafo*s spare parts In your goods. I shall write him in due course to tell him that the parts are underway* As to the enclosure of your letter, I have read them carefully and all of them appear to be in order. If there is anything else you would like me to do, just feel free to let me know* When in Cairo make an attempt to pay Mr* Hashen a courtesy call and mention me kindly to him* Meanwhile, I have written by the same mail to Zaki Saad at his home address (Street 86, no* 1, Maadi) and alerted him to your arrival in September and asked his help in acquiring the permission for digging and repairing part of the Cathedral foundations* The last word, however, which you must be aware of, is that Zaki Saad has tendered his wish to be pensioned off from office on account of attainment of a certain age. So he may not be himself at the helm when you arrive but he will surely be in a position to go with you to the Antiquities and his word as an independent partisan will go a long way. I do not know when he will be out or who succeeds him, but I am sura he will act affectively. Of course, he hopes in future to be able to come to America on a lecture tour. He may mention this to you and of course you will promise him that we shall join hands in helping whenever the |
