Show I was. fortunate to APDO. 37 23'*t\S latch onto a batch WA>ZANILLO, COL 15 Nov. 1974 of this paper before fcifcXtCO they discarded it'. THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ANN ARBOR KELSEY MUSEUM OF ARCHAEOLOGY Dear Lola and Aziz, We arrived just two weeks ago after a journey of over 9000 miles and of two-months1 duration. What a trip! Across Canada to the Gaspe Peninsula then down the whole East Coast to St. Petersburg, around the Gulf of Mexico to San Antonio and then down. Visited over 35 families, many of whom we may never see again since this id to be my last time for long distance driving. We will return via the whole West Coast to Canada then Yellowstone and across. .After that I will call it quits I We will either fly or train down, I will buy a VW here and that will be that. In San Antonio I almost turned back to AA after mother had two strong attacks of vertigo. But a good doctor there told us not to worry, that it came from the inner ear, to take some pills and go on. Which we did. She has had some discomfort since but in lessening intensity. ^he climatic change coming down the last mountain to the coastal plain was quite sudden...from the cool altiplano to real tronical 90 and 90^ humidity. Fortunately it has abated to the usual mild but warm climate with which you are familiar. And the nights are cool and that always helps. At first mother just went into the water to get wet. Now she is up to 200 strokes and increasing them daily. So you see she is quite well. We are not staying at the hotel. Instead we have taken the same apartment we had 2 and 3 years ago. We are quite h'ppy here, much roomier than the hotel cottage and I am able to cook up better meals I We will be here until 20 Dec. then £pr one month we will be at the lovely spa on Lake Chaaala (Apdo. 181, Chapala, Jal.). We return here where we plan to stay until April. When are youall coming down? I think tourism is going to suffer greater this year. Prices are just as high in hotels and restaurants here as they are in the States...and with fewer comforts. Gasoline is not 65 cents/gal. and expected to go to 1.00 any time. In Italy we were aole to get 'tourist cards' which allowed us to purchase gas at a reduced price. But not so here...in fact the:r would like the tourists to pay even more. They will find out first-hand about killing the goose... When ne is housekeeping the costs have not gone up that much, fortunately. Oh yes...first-hand news from Sinai. The retired Pres. of Lourdes Junior Colleg, a very good friend of ours, Sister Semigia who taught archaeology and religious history took 3 months off to go to Israel and visit various historical sites. Since I gave two lectures on Sinai at her institution she has always been interested in it. T gave her a letter of introduction to Fra. Diony sius. ^ A,s it turned out he is no longer there, for 2 years has been on ggrCj^ But the new Archbishop is Fra. Damianos1 And he lives in the Monastery. So he treated her royally, many cups of coffee. She even climbed Jebel Musah at 4AM and saw the beautiful sunrise. Now why didn't any of us ever think _J doing tha t? Damianos wrote me a very nice note. My Bedouin Saad, no doubt with the benefit of a great"letter of recommendation I wrote him, is now working at Sharm-el-Sheikh. His wife was called to the Monast. to receive the money and letter I had sent him.
