William Mulder, Director Center for Intercultural Studies The University My dear Bills Truly.it is a pleasure to resume correspondence with you. I nave refrained, from"writing while I knew that you might still be in Seattle. I hope by now that you are safely resettled at home and in the Center. Our summer has been as hectic as we expected it to be, and we are still living in a whirlpool. I am toiling beyond measure to straighten things in time for an early departure. To do so, I am constrained to enter directly into a business matter where your good offices are courted for prompt action. The enclosed invoice shows how the book harvest is mounting. Since then I have made further substantial acquisitions and the official donations are beginning to come. Now the need is calling for embarkation on the necessary preliminaries incurred by the desirability to have the collections shipped with us. After conferring with currency and customs authorities on matters of procedure, it is imperative that my bank account should be credited with the dollars equivalent to the value of the insulated bills which have been marshalled together in the enclosed comprehensive and authorized invoice for evident reasons, I trust that this will be found acceptable, since the detailed Arabic lists will serve no purpose at present and I have to save the labour of meaningless transliteration and translation for more urgent and more profitable pursuits at this end. I have already started exploring relevant stocks of modern publishers, and I am also recruiting several bookbinders for binding the endless paper-backs so current in this area at a meager fraction of the cost of the same in .America. For clarity and precision, I hope you do not mind me tabulating the definite requests which I submit to yonr attention. 1. To the value of the enclosed invoice (#10,000.-), please add $2,000.- as part pre-payment of binding, packing, boxing, shipping and sundry incidentals - thus totalling §12,000.- for which the detailed account will be rendered after my return. I shall no doubt spend beyond that figure, but the balance can wait unless it is deemed necessary by the authorities that I should, make another dollar claim to the University. 2. The manner in which the funds are to be issued is rather important and varies a little from our previous deliberations. Since" these amounts have already been spent from my own account, it is deemed Registered UNIVERSITY OF U T AH Air kail SALT L A K E ClTY CENTER FOR INTERCULTURAL STUDIES |
