Show November U§ 1962 Fear President Olpin, Mr, ":rsd "ichols of our University Bookstore told tre recently that a friend of his, ir. ?#rd Gagosian, 3966 Mt. Olympus Way, of Arnenian descent, had an old Armenian ; ible and a fsalm Book which had been in the family for several generations and which he would like to present to the University of Utah (or B.Y.U.) Bluet none of his descendants spoke or read Armenian* I took the liberty to meet Mr. Gagosian today and essslat the volumes. T^e former dates from the l°th century, has an antique binding and cover, and. may represent an Armenian Version of the Bible of considerable antiquity. The Psalm Book appears to be a translation froa English Into Ari^nian of popular 19th century hymns and nay have sorne linguistic value. IT. Atiya, whose opinion I value in the area of Middle -est,, said whips I called him that gifts of this sort which are preferred without entailment might have value for the University. T em sure that the University and you does not wish to accept private libraries or old bo .k collections without considerable discrimination, but in this case I can see no reason for rejecting the offer under certain conditions. If you concur, a letter somewhat similar to the one attached might be sent to ?"r, Gagosian, accepting his proposed, gift. Sincerely, Dear Aziz, I was as cautious as possible about reflecting your opinion. In the course of my conversation with Mr. Gagosian he told me that he had attended a Bapjfist Missio School in Armenia and the Bible may well be an Armenian translation (by a Baptist?) of the English Authorized Version instead of a copy of sn older Armenian Version. This aiso has some investigative value for research. Mr. Gagosian is a retired building contractor of some^ireans judging from the house in which he lives . ^o3%r) |
