Show REMARKS ABOUT THE AZIZ S. ATIYA LIBRARY FOR MIDDLE EAST STUDIES During the present Summer Quarter, and in connection with my assignment as Visiting Professor of History and my association with the Middle East Center, I have had the opportunity to work in the Aziz S. Atiya Library for Middle East Studies and to use its Arabic and Western Languages collections, which in these remarks are considered as one "collection" and will be referred to as such. The other collections of the Library - Persian, Turkish and Hebrew - fall beyond my own specialty and, as I have not used them, are not covered in these remarks. 1. It has been a pleasure to work in this Library. I have found in it, and in the other collections of the University Libraries, practically all that I and the students needed for the two courses which I have taught, namely, "Islamic Culture and Civilization," and "Arab Development Trends". Furthermore, I was able to work in an atmosphere of quiet, concentration and immediate accessibility to books and journals - an atmosphere that was enhanced by the ever ready and generous cooperation of the Director of the Library and his assistants. 2. As I probed further into the collection and followed its history from its inception to the present day, I came to appreciate more and more its inherent value to teaching and research in Arabic studies. But what is even more impressive |
