Show Tfid June 17, 19$$ Professor Aziz Suiyal Attiya Higher Institute of Coptic Studies Anba Rueis Building Sharia Al-Malika (Abbasiya) Cairo, Egypt My dear Professor Attiya: I have the honor, in behalf of the Faculty of Union Theological Seminar;'', to invite you to come to Union Seminary as Henry W. Luce Visiting Professor of World Christianity for the academic year 1956-57« Let me explain something of the background of this invitation. (I believe Professor Jeffery may already have intimated to you something of this information.) The interest of Union Seminary in the lihrld outreach of the Church throughout the more than one hundred years of its history, and the contributions which the Seminary haft* made to the thought and leadership of the Churches throughout the world are well known. Today when the awareness of American Christians of their membership in the Christian world community is becoming increasingly strong, that interest is, if possible, stronger than ever before. To further that interest here, a chair has recently been endowed in Union Seminary in honor of the late Henry W, Luce, entitled the Henry W. Luce Visiting Professorship of World Christianity. Its purpose is to bring to the Seminary fo^nost leaders from Churches overseas to take a position on our Faculty for periods of one year each^to interpret to us the most important developments in the Christian movement in their own lands. The Luce Professorship was inaugurated in 19k$; its previous incumbents have been Dr. Francis CM. Wei, the President of Hua Chung College, China, 19U5-U6; Dr. Paul David Devanandan, formerly Professor of Philosophy and the History of Religions, the United Theological College, Bangalore, 19li7-li8; Professor Lootfy Levonian, Dean of the Near East School of Theology, Beirut, 1950-5lj Professor Gonzalo Baez-Camargo of The Theological Seminary, Mexico City, Mexico, 1953.-52; Professor Z.K. Matthews of the South African Native College, Fort Hare, Cape Province, South Africa, 1952-53) Professor TetsutaroaAriga of .the National University,- Kyoto, Japan, 1953-5i*n~ and ia the past year Principal David G. Moses of Hislop College, Nagpur, India.
