Show 992 In Review The mixing began in August, on a sunbaked practice field in drought-stricken Price, Utah. In the unlikely setting of this isolated mining town, Utah football coach Ron McBride and his assistants blended the ingredients for a centennial birthday party. Four months later, to the day, their preseason batter ended up in a bowl. Ironically, the start to Utah's 100th football season looked like anything but a cakewalk. Burned by No. 11 Nebraska (49- 22), the Utes left Lincoln smarting even worse, after the loss of All-America wide receiver Bryan Rowley for the season to a broken ankle. Five days later, the once veteran offense took another hit when it received word from the NCAA that all-conference offensive tackle Mike DeHoog had completed his eligibility and could no longer play. But rather than shelving their preseason bowl plans, the Utes went on a four-game binge, beginning with a feast at Utah State. After falling behind 12-11 at the half, Utah went airborne. Senior quarterback Frank Dolce rolled up 298 second-half passing yards (376 total), including 111 to sophomore slot back Henry Lusk, in a 42-18 Utah road romp. The Utes brought even more to the table in game three, after DeHoog was tossed back into the U. stew-his eligibility restored by the NCAA. And the Ute staff found a Rowley replacement in senior wideout Sean Williams, who gobbled up seven Dolce passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns to send Utah to a 42-9 win over Oregon State. The Ute defense also came into its own-holding the Beavers to just 312 yards of total offense and denying them the end zone in the first half. The birthday party raged for another two weeks. At Colorado State, first-year Ute Pierre Jones came off the bench to replace injured all-WAC tailback Keith Williams and responded with 143 net rushing yards. Brad Foster supplied the gift wrapping to Utah's 33-29 win, when he blocked a Ram punt on Utah's 8-yard line with 1:38 left on the clock-setting up the game winning touchdown. When Utah concocted a 38-17 win over league-leading Hawaii, a bowl for this Ute bunch seemed inevitable-and a WAC championship possible. But disaster struck on Oct. 17, when Dolce went down with a sprained knee against New Mexico, helping the Lobos to pick up their first WAC win- 24-7. The next week, winless Texas-El Paso crashed Utah's Homecoming party with a 20-13 upset. Championship balloon burst, the still Dolce-less Utes faced one of the WAC's hottest teams-Air Force-at a place they had never won (Colorado Springs). Utah ground out 297 rushing yards, 119 by Williams in his first game back off the injured reserve list, and Utah escaped Colorado Springs with an unexpected 20-13 win. Now 5-3, the Utes needed to win one of their remaining three games to make McBride the first U. coach since 1972-73 to produce back-to-back winning seasons. They laid an egg in their first attempt-losing at Fresno State, 41-15, in Dolce's first try at signal calling since his knee injury. But Dolce returned to form the next Saturday, and Utah whipped the previous week's egg into a 38-7 win over Wyoming. Dolce threw for 289 yards, Lusk hauled in six passes for 95 yards and a score, and tailbacks Williams and Jones combined for 133 rushing yards and one TD. The beleaguered Ute defense, aching for healthy linebackers, did the hurting this time around-shooting down the vaunted Poke air attack. Winning record assured, Utah prepared to face arch rival Brigham Young in its final game of the regular season. The Utes looked outmatched in the first three quarters-falling behind 31-0. But Dolce tossed a triplicate of TD strikes in the fourth quarter to pull Utah within nine (31-22). Suddenly, BYU looked beatable. Unfortunately, the clock was not. The score held, as time ran out. But no one was leaving the party yet. Along came the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl with an invitation and Utah was off to its first bowl game since 1964. On Dec. 29, Utah and heavily favored Washington State met in Arizona Stadium, where the Cougars raced to a 21-0 first quarter lead. Once again the Utes responded-this time cooking up a 28-point second and third-quarter recipe, while slamming the oven door on the WSU offense, which produced just a single touchdown after the first quarter. Unfortunately, a fourth-quarter WSU field goal blew out the candles on Utah's centennial season, 31-28. But what a party it had been. In the end, all that was missing was the frosting on the cake. A bowl victory. Ed Miller (37), Mark Swanson (5), and Preston Christensen (48) formed part of the WAC's third-place total defense leader in 1992. Miller and Swanson are back this fall. 49 topper Bowl Days Ed Miller on kick return duty at Copper Bowl. The McBride family showed up in force at Utah's first bowl game in 28 years. Utah, which won the second half, 22-14, lost All-America wide receiver Bryan Rowley for the season when Rowley broke his ankle leaping for a pass. Tailback Keith "K-Dub" Williams kicked off his junior campaign with 106 net yards on 15 carries. He raced for a 54-yard touchdown with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter. In his first outing as a Ute, backup tailback Pierre Jones rushed for 42 yards and one score. Senior quarterback Frank Dolce struggled early against the powerful Nebraska defense. Dolce finished the afternoon with 207 passing yards (21- of-38), with a 7-yard TD strike to slot back Henry Lusk, but he threw four interceptions. Ute quarterback Frank Dolce peppered Utah State's defensive backfield for 376 yards (298 in the second half) and two touchdowns. Dolce, who targeted seven different receivers, completed 25-of42 pass attempts. He also rushed for a touchdown. Sophomore slot back Henry Lusk had a career day, hauling in seven Dolce tosses for 111 yards. Senior fullback Steve Abrams caught the first two touchdown passes of his career. Defensively, the Ute secondary manhandled two USU quarterbacks, with senior nickel back Reggie Alston picking off a pass and returning it 69 yards to the Aggie 1-yard line. Junior free safety Mark Swanson intercepted a pass and romped 46 yards for a score and sophomore DB Jeff Kirkman got the first pick of his career. Utah 8 3 9 Utah State 9 3 6_ Scoring Summary UU-K. Senior wide receiver Sean Williams, Utah's No. 1 wide out after the season-opening injury to All-America Bryan Rowley, caught two of Dolce's TD pitches-for 36 and 38 yards. True freshman David Kozlowski came out of redshirt status to catch five passes for 101 yards and the first TD of his Ute career. A stingy Ute defense, which allowed OSU just 312 yards in total offense, shut out the Beavers in the first half and held them to a field goal and a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters. Utah put 21 points on the board in each half, with its final score coming on a blocked punt recovered by Derrick Odum in the end zone. Utah's offense gained 527 yards in the 42- 9 blowout. COLLINS, Colo.-The Utes met a Colorado State team coming off a big upset road win over LSU and the fired up Rams scored on their very first possession with a 76-yard run. But Utah knotted the score nine minutes later on a 2-yard plunge by fullback Jamal Anderson. Starting tailback Keith Williams left the game with a sprained ankle on Utah's first drive, but his replacement, Pierre Jones, didn't miss a beat. Jones rushed for a career-high 143 yards on 23 carries, while Anderson stepped up with 86 yards and two touchdowns. Utah led 17-13 at the half, but fell behind, 17-19, when CSU opened the second stanza with a touchdown. Utah still trailed late in the fourth quarter, 29-26, but Brad Foster blocked a Ram punt on Utah's 8-yard line with 1:38 left on the clock, setting up the game-winning TD pass from Frank Dolce to Sean Williams. UTAH 38, HAWAII 17 Game 5, October 10, 1992 SALT LAKE CITY-Eventual WAC champion Hawaii came to town with an unblemished WAC mark and the league's best defense. But the Utes would send both packing in a 38-17 win in Rice Stadium. A high-octane Rainbow offense managed just 335 total yards and connected on a dismal 4-of-21 pass attempts. On the other side of the ball, Hawaii's defense gave up 478 yards of total offense. In his first start at Utah, junior tailback Pierre Jones rushed for 159 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Frank Dolce tossed 82 of his 248 passing yards to senior wide receiver Sean Williams and benefitted from fullback Jamal Anderson's leaping 24-yard touchdown grab in the corner of the end zone. But disaster struck when starting quarterback Frank Dolce injured his knee on one of six Lobo sacks and left the game in the second half. Utah's offense never got untracked, managing just one first-quarter score. Sophomore transfer Mike McCoy, in his first real test as a Ute quarterback, completed 15-of-25 passes for 163 yards, but couldn't get the Utes across the goal line. In his first start at Utah, backup quarterback Mike McCoy threw for 192 yards and rushed for Utah's only TD, but was sacked five times. Utah incorporated an AFA-like rushing attack in a game played in near-blizzard conditions, and Keith Williams returned from the injured reserve list with a bang, rushing for 119 yards. With backup quarterback Mike McCoy doing more handing off than passing, the Utes gained 297 of their 381 total yards on the ground. The Ute defense, led by a 10-tackle day (five for a loss) by Luther Elliss, allowed just one AFA touchdown and a pair of field goals in the 20-13 Utah win. An uptight Ute team spotted favored Washington State a 21-0 lead just one quarter into the Weiser Lock Copper Bowl. But the Utes got the feel of postseason play in the second and third quarters, when they put 28 points on the board, while holding the Cougars to one second-quarter TD. Frank Dolce hit Sean Williams for Utah's first score, a 10-yard pass play. Six minutes later, Keith Williams scampered into pay dirt from 25 yards out to narrow the gap to 21-14. After a 48-yard touchdown pass by Washington State's Drew Bledsoe, Dolce countered with a 49-yard strike to Henry Lusk, who plucked the ball from his defender's hands in a leaping end zone catch. An 8-yard TD rush by Pierre Jones tied the score at 28, but only for 20 seconds, at which point Washington State responded with 22-yard field to take a 31-28 lead. Utah's Chris Yergensen's 20-yard attempt with 3:19 remaining in the game went wide left and the Utes came up short.
