"I see a solid team without a major weakness; one with enough players to put a good team on the field," says McBride. "But for this team to do well, the players have to do everything right. And they have to do it every day. Our team needs to have a tremendous work ethic in order to be successful," cautions McBride. Hence the Ute slogan for the 1992 campaign: "Every man, every day. Every man, every play." "We accomplished a lot of things last year, but I don't think we turned the corner," says the man who, last season, led Utah to a 7-5 record-its best in six years. "We've done pretty well with the big picture, now we need to do all the little things right." The big picture looks like this. Utah's defense has improved 41 places in the national rankings since McBride assumed the head coaching reins. The nation's worst Senior Steve Abrams won the starting fullback berth in spring ball. defense the year before he arrived, Utah jumped to the top of the WAC in total defense last fall. Two second-team all-WAC selections return (Dave Chaytors and Reggie Alston), along with two honorable mention picks (Mark Swanson and Sharrieff Shah), for a 1992 defense that goes two deep without losing a step in most positions. Offensively, a veteran crew which lost just one starter is in position to equal the gajns made on the defensive side of the ball. With a vastly improved offensive line, a stable quarterback situation (starter Frank Dolce is back for his senior campaign), a first-team all-WAC wide receiver (Bryan Rowley) and the Utes' first 1,000-yard rusher in five years (Keith Williams), the offense should come into its own. Of Utah's defensive prognosis, McBride says, "We lost some quality players, but we prepared for their loss with redshirts and good recruiting. As for the offense, we now have depth, quality and experience. Last year, when a couple of guys got hurt, we had no answers. This year, we do." Answers that could translate into a bowl bid, if the improvement shown in McBride's first two years continues. The quest for a postseason party in this 100- year anniversary celebration of football at the U. is on. Here's the 1992 Ute breakdown, position by position. DEFENSIVE LINE Gone are all-WAC linemen Jimmy Bellamy and Keith Embray, but replacements have been waiting in the wings since last fall. "We knew exactly what we would lose and we redshirted a lot of guys in anticipation of those openings. We're at the point in our program where we have players who can step in and do the job," says McBride. Just two starters return on the line, but they're among the WAC's best. Tackles Dave Chaytors, a senior, and Blaine Berger, a junior, two of Utah's strongest players, combined for 129 total tackles and ranked first and second on the team in hurries. Adam Swaney, a transfer from Southern California who sat out last season, will figure up front, too. At the ends, injuries last year actually helped the 1992 forecast. Current sophomore Luther Elliss, thrust into a starting role midway through last season when in- THE OUTLOOK juries struck the line, quickly established himself as a money player. Named Utah's Defensive Newcomer of the Year, Elliss is pegged to start at right end this fall. At left end, Anthony Hall, whose injury-shortened 1991 season earned him an additional hardship year, will get a good look. He'll have to beat out senior Mike Lewis, who moved over from tackle. "Our leaders on the line will be Berger, Chaytors, Elliss, Hall, Lewis and Swaney. Somebody like a (Ute freshman) Houdini Nua could blossom and make an immediate impact. Berger and Swaney are really strong. Everybody else is very quick and runs well. We'll be aggressive on the line," promises McBride. Senior Pita Tonga, who received a hardship year after injuring his knee in the second game of 1991, is the leader, according to McBride, "But we have about seven or eight guys in there who can really play ball. "Having Pita back is a big plus. I thought he was our best linebacker last year until he got hurt," offers McBride. "Pita made all the calls and did the mental things out there." Tonga will start in the middle, ahead of part-time 1991 starter Kim Lambert. On the weak side, second-team all-WAC defender Reggie Alston will bring his team-leading tackle total (139) of a year ago over from the secondary. It's a three-man race on the strong side, where athletic senior Errol Martin faces a stiff challenge for his starting berth from both senior Preston Christensen and transfer Ken Buss. "Errol, Pita and Preston can just flat out run," emphasizes McBride. "And we have a couple of big guys who can really plug the holes in Lambert and Buss. Proven veterans, including honorable mention all-WAC picks Sharrieff Shah and Mark Swanson, are tagged for every position in the secondary, but McBride and his staff cast an eye to the future in their recruiting and signed seven new DBs. "The secondary we have in place is quality and we brought in some more quality guys. However, we're going to start running out of secondary guys after this year, so we'll recruit a group of freshmen behind this class," says McBride about his big backfield recruiting class. At right corner, tall (6'4") junior Ed Miller and junior college transfer Edwin Garrette engaged in a heated battle in spring ball. On the left side, redshirt junior Sam Rhodes attracted rave reviews in the spring and earned the starting nod ahead of senior Derrick Odum. Rhodes will also play at nickel back, where he, senior Cedric Crawford and sophomore Jeff Kirkman make this a solid position. At strong safety, Shah should emerge as one of the WAC's best after a sensational sophomore campaign. Watch for more of the same from his counterpart at free safety-Swanson. Swanson made a successful transition from corner to free safety in the spring. "Sharrieff Shah should really come into his own. He and Mark Swanson have started for the past two years," notes McBride. "Ed Miller played exceptionally well toward the end of last season and Sam Rhodes is going to make a huge difference back there. "The key to any offense is the offensive line," insists McBride. "For the first time since I've been here, we have some depth and development on the line: If the offensive line is good, everything else goes along with it." 10 THE OUTLOOK It should be good, with starters returning in every position and the extra attention awarded it by McBride, a former line coach. "Getting our offensive line where I want it to be has been a slower process than I anticipated," acknowledges McBride, "But we're finally getting closer to where we need to be, as far as strength, maturity and depth go." Redshirts and a pile of junior college transfers will jockey for time on a line headed by second-team all-WAC tackle Mike DeHoog, a senior. Redshirt sophomore Anthony Brown, at 6'5", 312 pounds, could make some big holes as DeHoog's backup at left tackle. Senior Russ Dailey is a two-year starter at right tackle. Left guard offers perhaps the most excitement on the line, where sophomore Roy Ma'afaia made incredible inroads as a mid-season starter in '91. "Mike DeHoog has emerged as a real leader for our offense and Roy Ma'afaia is a tremendous player. By his third game last year, Roy started playing winning football," says McBride. At right guard, senior Tom McNitt and junior redshirt Ed Castillo lend credence to McBride's claim of strength and depth. Experience is the word at center, where junior Mark Barton will start for his second straight season. Sophomore Lance Scott and juco transfer Dave Boghossian provide Utah a solid cushion at center. Other players to watch on the offensive line include Cecil Thomas, Aaron Hansen and Jason Emerick, who made big developmental strides in the spring, as well as junior college transfers Tim Todd and Kani Nevas, who just need time to learn the system. Back is senior starter Frank Dolce, Utah's 1991 Offensive MVP. Dolce (177-of- 314 for 2,444 yards and 16 touchdowns) ranked 17th in the nation in total offense and passed for 222.2 yards per game. "I feel much better about a team with an established quarterback situation," admits McBride, who handed Dolce the starting reins in the spring of 1991 and watched him develop into one of the finest signal callers in the pass-happy WAC. McBride also likes his backup QBs, especially sophomore Mike McCoy, who transferred from Long Beach State after it eliminated its football program. He threw for nearly 1,000 yards last fall as a '49er. "Frank Dolce is our main guy. He is extremely smart, knows what to do with the football and is exactly what we need to run this offense," lauds McBride. "Mike McCoy has experience at this level and has the attitude and leadership to contribute, but he has yet to take a snap here." Quarterbacks (1991 totals, where applicable) Yr. Hgt. Wgt. Alt. Comp. Although big time players like senior All-America candidate Bryan Rowley (a 1991 second-team The Sporting News' Ail- American and a first-team all-WAC pick), Vernon Shaver and Sean Williams are back to run the routes, junior college transfers could take Utah's receivers to the next level. "We brought in three big, fast guys in Greg Hooks, Curtis Marsh and Deron Claiborne. Without those guys, we'd be a little thin. With them, receiver is going to be an outstanding position for us," proposes McBride. Errol Martin (45), Sharrieff 'The Sheriff Shah (33) and Reggie Alston (24) are three of the top defenders in the Western Athletic Conference. 11 THE OUTLOOK Rowley, already Utah's career reception yardage leader (2,303) and its two-time MVP, caught 60 passes for 1,011 yards (16.9 yards per catch) and 11 touchdowns as a junior. He'll start ahead of Williams (second in 1991 with 27 catches for 290 yards) at split end. "Bryan Rowley is probably the most exciting player ever to play at Utah," raves McBride. "I thought he was the best player in the conference last year, as far as what he does day in and day out-which is simply everything. Every time Bryan has the ball in his hands, he's capable of breaking a big play." At flanker, speedy sophomore Vernon Shaver will likely retain the starting spot he earned midway through last fall, but he'll share time with newcomer Hooks, who had a sensational spring. Junior Greg Hoffman, a tight end for the past two years, moved over to slot, where he's scheduled to start ahead of sophomore Hank Dorner. The tight end position will figure more prominently than in the past, thanks to improved personnel. The potential shown by senior starter Scott Murry and juniors Derek Whiddon and Kurt Haws has McBride saying, "We'll probably use the tight end more this year, because we have better players there. Murry, Whiddon and Haws are very good receivers, but they'll need to block, too. Rick Verbalaitis probably has the best physical profile." Williams, a second-team all-WAC running back, rushed for 1,076 yards (fifth in the WAC) and six touchdowns. He posted five 100-yard games-the most by a Ute since 1988. Williams' backup, fellow junior Charlie Brown, was the Utes' second leading rusher (382 yards), despite missing most of four games with an injury. "Williams and Brown are real slasher type guys. If the blocking's good, they'll be hard to stop," warns McBride. Junior college transfer Pierre Jones, who showed some big-gain abilities in spring drills, will carry the ball plenty, too. At fullback, senior Steve Abrams came out of spring as the starter, but not without a strong push from sophomore Henry Lusk, a former defensive back with loads of potential on the offensive side. Jamal Anderson, a highly rated junior college transfer who will join the Ute team in the fall, will give Abrams and Lusk a run at fullback. "Abrams is a guy who does every- Name Abrams J. Just with the number of linebackers we have on the team-and all those guys should be able to play on special teams- we should be solid," says McBride. Utah's return game plans on producing dividends, despite the loss of school record holder LaVon Edwards, with speedsters like Bryan Rowley, Vernon Shaver and Sean Williams available.
